6 key steps to building a healthy wallet

I remember thinking, there must be more to life than living week by week and juggling money around my bank accounts to pay the bills, and constantly living in fear of how we are going to manage when the big expenses pop up.  Everywhere I turned I was surrounded by language that suggested that this was the norm – money conversations with friends and family, and the media hyping up the doom and gloom.

So, I started to look outside of my circle. I started looking for the evidence of people living life the way they wanted, people who over came challenges to get to where they are and people who wanted to support others to do the same.

What I discovered was that it came down to mindset, you couldn’t wait for someone else to change your life, you had to do this yourself and that there was never going to be a right time you just had to decide that you were going to change things.

“Nothing changes, if nothing changes” Right.

Financial freedom looks different to everyone, wealth looks different to everyone.

To be able to create your financial freedom you need to understand your values and create goals that resonate with you. Not looking at what you should be doing but what you want to do.

Wealth is often focused on money, but it can also be how you spend your time, the relationships you have and your health. Wealth is you living the life you want.

Time to get clear on what Wealth means to you, not what others are doing but your core values this is the start of your vision, your life you want to be living.

Financial freedom looks different for everyone, it could be travelling 2 -3 times a year, it could be to have more time and energy with your kids, it could be knowing you have Christmas financially covered, or having adventure weekends without financial strains.

Since 2016 I have been on a journey to change my thought patterns around money.

Everyone has a moment life (or perhaps a few) where they can make a choice, either you accept things as they are or you change them.

I came so close to just accepting that this was our life, to live in debt, to just make do until we retire and hopefully just have enough to live off.

But when I said it out loud I realized I didn’t want this to be my story, I wanted to live an enriched life, I wanted to feel happy and full of energy every single day.

I couldn’t rely on others to change this for me I had to do it myself and I wanted to help others do the same, we as a whole need to change the narrative, so our children can have memories of family time together, and so they can start off their adult lives with positive money habits not learn as you go like we did.

2.      Know what it is you want to achieve - what are your short medium- and long-term goals.

3.      know your cashflow - Are you living with a surplus or a shortfall?

4.      uncover the money stories that are holding you back.

5.      Look at growth and protection strategies

6.      Create a plan to get you from where you are right now to where you want to be.
