5 Simple Steps to Start Fresh and Build Financial Abundance in 2025
Why a Money Reset is Key for 2025
Christmas has always been a time of financial stress for families, we have a moment in time where we spend more money than we budget for and make the repercussions a January problem - where we regret our money decisions and get the holiday blues as we prepare to drag ourselves back to work to pay back our credit cards (or afterpay) but also knowing that we have school supplies and term fees just around the corner.
What if you could spend freely in December and not have a splurge hangover in January?
How great would that feel?
If you do the work now it is possible and I want to show you how to reset in these 5 Simple Steps to Start Fresh and Build Financial Abundance in 2025.
Step 1: Reflect on Your 2024 Finances
Before you can plan ahead you need to look at the lessons 2024 gave you in regards to spending, saving and debt habits.
What went well?
What could you improve?
What are your biggest financial pain points?
Reflect on the year that has been through tools - check your online banking for tools and resources to help, or go through your bank statements.
Step 2: Define Your Financial Goals for 2025
Now you can start brainstorming ideas for what you want to achieve in 2025, best tip I can give is to mull this over for a few days, visualise you achieving each one, see how it feels, what does it do to your energy levels for example does it excite you or leave you feeling depleted?
Once you have the goals you want to achieve, time to turn them into SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals.
Examples:
Save $5,000 for a family holiday in June
Pay off a specific credit card by June.
Build a 3-month emergency fund by December 1st
It is important to align your goals with what you want to achieve, no more shoulds, get crystal clear on what it is you want, how you want to be living your life.
Step 3: Declutter Your Finances
Explain the concept of financial decluttering: cutting out unnecessary expenses and simplifying accounts.
Offer practical tips:
Cancel unused subscriptions.
Automate savings.
Consolidate debts where possible.
Link this step to mental clarity and better financial control.
Decluttering is a great task at the beginning of every month, it is a chance to cut our unnecessary expenses and simplify your accounts because I am guessing this got a little bit crazy in December.
A few simple things you could do:
Cancel unused subscriptions.
Automate savings.
Consolidate debts where possible.
I don’t know about you, but I have so many decisions to make in a day and a never ending to do list so simplifying and automating where I can is one less thing I have to remember.
5. Step 4: Create a Realistic Spending Plan
Break down the difference between a restrictive budget and a flexible spending plan.
Introduce categories like needs, wants, and savings, and suggest percentage allocations.
Provide an example plan for a family of four.
I don’t know about you, but I really dislike the word budget. I use Cashflow Analysis or Cashflow Plan, why? Because they feel less restrictive and more in control. It is all about mindset but I will cover that in more detail another day.
Let’s quickly cover categories basics, you have:
Fixed expenses which are things like, rent/mortgage, utilities, rates, water, power, gas, insurances and debt repayments
Variable expenses like, food, petrol, entertainment, subscriptions
And Savings
6. Step 5: Build Habits for Long-Term Success
Consistency is important! Set yourself up a simple routine that you can easily slip into your day/week/month like:
Block out a time in your calendar every week to have a date with your finances - check in to see how things are going.
Set up monthly goals with your 90 day money tracker.
And make sure you celebrate the small wins to stay motivated.
